What is Phimosis and Paraphimosis?

What is Phimosis and Paraphimosis?

Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin of the penis is too tight to be retracted over the glans (head of the penis). It can be physiological (normal in infants and young boys) or pathological due to scarring, infections, or chronic inflammation. Paraphimosis, on the other hand, occurs when the foreskin is pulled back and cannot be returned to its normal position, leading to swelling and restricted blood flow to the glans, which is a medical emergency.

Classification and Uses

Classification and Uses

Phimosis can be classified as physiological (resolving naturally with age) or pathological (requiring treatment). Paraphimosis is always an acute condition needing urgent intervention. While mild phimosis might not require treatment, severe cases can cause difficulty in urination, pain, or infections, necessitating medical attention. Treatments include topical steroids, stretching exercises, and, in severe cases, circumcision or preputioplasty. Paraphimosis, if untreated, can lead to tissue damage or necrosis, requiring immediate intervention such as manual reduction or, in severe cases, surgery.

When to see a Doctor?

When to see a Doctor?

A person should see a urologist if phimosis causes pain, recurrent infections, difficulty urinating, or sexual dysfunction. Paraphimosis, being a medical emergency, requires immediate medical attention to prevent complications such as gangrene or permanent damage to the penis. Early diagnosis and timely treatment help prevent severe consequences and ensure better urogenital health.
