Sexual Dysfunctions - Lets Debunk The Top Myths

Hey, I’m Dr. Srinivas, a psychiatrist and sexual health consultant at Swastha Clinics, Hyderabad, where we’ve helped over 20,000+ individuals overcome challenges related to mental and sexual well-being. In this blog, I want to shed light on one of the most misunderstood topics — sexual health — and bust the common myths surrounding it, so you can take informed steps toward a healthier, happier life.

Despite being one of the most misunderstood and stigmatized conditions, sexual dysfunction is a common concern that many individuals face throughout their lives. Sexual dysfunction encompasses a range of issues that can affect both men and women, significantly impacting their quality of life and interpersonal relationships. Research indicates that approximately 43% of women and 31% of men experience some form of sexual dysfunction during their lifetime, with conditions such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder, erectile dysfunction, and orgasmic disorders being notably prevalent. These disorders can stem from various physiological and psychological factors, including hormonal imbalances, medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease, mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, and lifestyle choices like substance use.

Moreover, the stigma associated with sexual dysfunction often prevents individuals from seeking help or discussing their experiences openly. This lack of communication can exacerbate feelings of isolation and inadequacy. It is crucial to foster a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable addressing their concerns. Education plays a vital role in this process; by providing accurate information about the causes and treatments available for sexual dysfunction, we can empower individuals to seek appropriate care and improve their overall well-being. Treatments range from counselling and therapy to medical interventions, highlighting the importance of a tailored approach depending on the individual’s specific needs.

Myth 1 - Only singles masturbate

Masturbation isn’t just for people who are single or not in a relationship—it’s a natural and healthy part of human sexuality, regardless of your relationship status. In fact, many people in committed relationships continue to masturbate to explore their own desires and connect with their sexuality on a personal level. According to a survey by LELO, a leading sexual wellness brand, 78% of people in relationships said they masturbate, highlighting that solo pleasure is completely normal even when you have a partner.

Myth 2 - Masturbation can have negative health affects

Masturbation is a natural and healthy part of human sexuality, and when practiced in moderation, it poses no harm to physical health. In fact, it offers several positive effects such as reducing stress, promoting better sleep, and supporting overall sexual wellness. The American Sexual Health Association notes that regular masturbation may also help reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men, making it a valuable aspect of maintaining prostate health.

Myth 3 - Medication is always effective in treating sexual dysfunctions

While medication like viagra can play a role in managing sexual dysfunction, it’s not always the only solution—nor is it always effective on its own. At Swastha Clinics we emphasize a holistic approach to sexual health that goes beyond prescriptions. Incorporating therapy, making positive lifestyle changes, and addressing psychological and emotional factors often lead to more sustainable and fulfilling outcomes. Each individual’s journey is unique, and the right combination of treatments depends on their personal needs and challenges.

Myth 4 - Only elder men are affected by Erectile Dysfunction

One such widespread misconception concerning ED is that it primarily affects elderly men. Yet, men of all ages, even young boys, can be impacted by ED. Contrary to popular belief, ED has been growing to be more prevalent among younger men, with a prevalence of up to 30% among males under the age of 40, as per studies.

Obesity, smoking, or excessive alcohol consumption propose an increased risk of developing ED. Moreover, psychological elements like stress and worry can cause ED in men of all ages.

Myth 5 - Only men get addicted to porn

Women can also develop a compulsive relationship with pornography, albeit men are more likely to report having such a concern. A survey conducted by the website “Stop the New Drug,” reported that 64% of women indicated pornography had a bad effect on their self-esteem while 18% revealed that they were hooked to it. In addition, a study in the Journal of Sex Research indicated that pornographic users had higher levels of sexual compulsivity than non-users.

Myth 6 - Early ejaculation is a sign of weakness

Premature ejaculation is not a sign of weakness or inadequacy. It is a medical concern that many individuals experience at some point in their lives. There is no shame in facing it, and it does not reflect negatively on your masculinity or personal strength.

At Swastha Clinics, we believe in treating sexual health issues with empathy and expertise. We help patients understand that premature ejaculation is both common and treatable. With the right support and guidance, it’s possible to regain confidence and improve your sexual well-being.

Myth 7 - Low testosterone causes Erectile Dysfunction

Although low testosterone is one cause of ED, it is not the sole one. In actuality, low testosterone levels account for just approximately 5% of instances of ED. Vascular disease, neurological conditions, and psychological concerns like anxiety and depression are some more common reasons of ED.

According to a research in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, only 5.6% of men with ED had low testosterone levels, whereas 69.4% had vascular illness and 47.6% had neurological concerns.
